From Pain to Purpose: The Story of Massimo Santucci

There are stories that cross time, overcome borders, and become true examples of courage. The story of Massimo Santucci, originally from the Mirteto district of Massa, is one of them.

As a child, he was involved in a serious accident that led to the loss of one of his arms. A trauma that could have broken anyone. But instead of surrendering to fate, Massimo chose to transform that pain into strength, turning his wound into a life mission dedicated to helping others.

For family reasons, he later moved to Switzerland, where he built a successful career in management while also developing a deep commitment to social causes. From this calling came the European Association for Victims of Violence, created to support men, women, and children affected by abuse, injustice, and suffering often endured in silence.

His path also led him into Swiss public institutions, where he served as a councilor in a municipality located between Bern and Zurich. A role that reflected the trust of the local community and the recognition of his human and professional values.

Massimo Santucci has always believed that real change must come through cooperation between citizens, institutions, and responsible media. For him, the fight against violence is not built through hatred, but through respect, dialogue, and prevention.

In 2020, he experienced a defining moment in his personal journey: meeting Pope Francis. It was a deeply meaningful encounter that strengthened his convictions and inspired him to write the book The Courage from Which Everything Begins, an autobiographical work and a message of hope.

The tragedy that took place in Massa on April 12, 2026, in which Giacomo Bongiorni lost his life in front of his eleven-year-old son, affected him profoundly. In that child, Massimo saw himself again—the pain he had experienced at the same age and the weight of a wound that remains for life.

From that sorrow came a concrete act of solidarity: the “Pope Francis” Charity Tournament – Second Edition, scheduled for May 16, 2026 at Campo Sportivo Colline Massesi. An event dedicated to Giacomo Bongiorni’s children and promoted under one clear message: No to Violence.

Taking part will be representatives of the Diocese of Massa Carrara, the European National Team for Victims of Violence, Carabinieri, Police, Guardia di Finanza, and the City of Massa. Different teams united by one purpose: turning memory into civic action.

The story of Massimo Santucci shows that even the deepest wounds can give rise to something meaningful. That pain can become empathy, service, and change.

Because true courage is not never falling, but rising again and helping others do the same.
